State Government Phone Directory Now Available on the Internet

(Pierre) -- State government has switched from using a printed phone directory of state offices and staff to a directory available to everyone on the Internet.

Gov. Bill Janklow, who assigned the state's Bureau of Information and Telecommunications to replace the print version with an electronic version, said the move was one of convenience and cost.

"The average cost of doing the state government phone directory was about $10,000 every year, and numbers would change and people would change jobs, so it would be out of date almost as soon as we printed it," Janklow said. "The Internet directory will always be current and is available to everyone and we don't have to go through the hassle and cost of printing a state phone book."

Last year, the state printed 6,000 copies of the 116-page phone directory at a cost of $1.70 per copy.

The new Internet directory is available on the state's website:

http://www.state.sd.us.

The telephone directory can be searched by name, phone number or state agency. Having the directory on the Internet allows state agencies to update information on a daily basis, providing citizens the most up to date contact information on state agency offices and their staff.

The directory includes:
  • Phone numbers and locations of state government staff
  • Phone numbers and locations of state government offices
  • State government agency toll-free numbers
  • Available phone numbers and locations of local government offices, and
  • K-12 school offices.

Local government offices who want to be included in the directory can contact Margie Newling at 773-5357 for information.

Paul Grabowicz on news from governments
While the U.S. government has been reluctant to release many details of its investigation into who was responsible for the Sept. 11 attacks, the British government late last week published on its website a report summarizing the links investigators allegedly have found to Osama bin Laden.

Privacy Versus Freedom

You can read about the issues in many spots. Start with PCW's "Will Attack Hurt Net Privacy?" It's a levelheaded examination of the problem with worthwhile links. You can find it here:

Wired Magazine explains how bin Laden may be embedding secret messages in message attachments--and how the authorities have reacted. Read it in "bin Laden: Steganography Master?" at

On the other hand, John Perry Barlow, co-founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation ( http://www.eff.org ) said: "Within a few hours, we will see beginning the most vigorous efforts to end what remains of freedom in America. Those of who are willing to sacrifice a little--largely illusory--safety in order to maintain our faith in the original ideals of America will have to fight for those ideals just as vigorously.

"I beg you to begin NOW to do whatever you can--whether writing your public officials, joining the ACLU or EFF, taking to the streets, or living visibly free and fearless lives--to prevent the spasm of control mania from destroying the dreams that far more have died for over the last 225 years than died this morning." You can read more on the World Trade Center Attack at Yahoogroup.
